outsider art

Let's start with a poem by Charles Bukowski

a smile to remember

we had goldfish and they circled around and around
in the bowl on the table near the heavy drapes
covering the picture window and
my mother, always smiling, wanting us all
to be happy, told me, "be happy Henry!"
and she was right: it's better to be happy if you
can
but my father continued to beat her and me several times a week
while
raging inside his 6-foot-two frame because he couldn't
understand what was attacking him from within.

my mother, poor fish,
wanting to be happy, beaten two or three times a
week, telling me to be happy: "Henry, smile!
why don't you ever smile?"

and then she would smile, to show me how, and it was the
saddest smile I ever saw

one day the goldfish died, all five of them,
they floated on the water, on their sides, their
eyes still open,
and when my father got home he threw them to the cat
there on the kitchen floor and we watched as my mother
smiled

---------------------------------------------------------------

In my opinion we cannot start a blog regarding human frailty and how psychosis draws us deeper to our artistic roots without a poem.

Brief definition: Outsider Art is an English synonym for the term Art Brut ( "raw art", "rough art"). It was coined by Roger Cardinal, an art critic, in 1972 to describe art which remains outside of the boundries of traditional and cultural guidelines. Often it is used to describe art created by asylum inmates, and those gravely mentally ill.

----------------------------------------------------------------
On the outsider art website, there stands a manifesto:

I am an artist

Being an artist is a scary thing to declare; it's much easier being a plumber or engineer or doctor. Not in doing...but in telling. When you say "I'm a plumber", everyone knows what you do. Same with a doctor or engineer. Most know why you do it, too. And probably how much you make.
But when you say "I am an artist", peoples minds go mad, they twirl and shake and tilt. You can see it in the air escaping their wordless lips , in the ends of their hair. You can see the confusion in their faces and the way they shake and stand.
Still, the artist prevails.
Not all of us can say we are creators, forming something from nothing, sometimes WITH nothing. The artists exhibited here are being artists. And we are proud to tell the world and show their work.

Fr. Andrew Lewandowski
  • A priest from the Roman Catholic After undergoing a period of depression, his parish allowed to get the help he needed, thus he decided to attend art school. After every artistic director told him he could not create, he continued and experimented with colour in his own way.
"I will not take myself seriously as an artist although I will take my art seriously. . To take myself seriously is to tarnish the reason I create. I hold that no work is worth so much that people who like it can not possess it. Each work is a unique and personal expression that flows from the source of my being. I will create whether or not my expression is understood or appreciated. I hold to my position as an outsider and I will use that position to continue to experience and represent that inner world that comes from me. As an outsider I will not hold to the expectations of others but remain true to my vision. I do not need to succeed, I do not need to be noticed or acclaimed, I need only to create."

"Joe Minter, a carpenter (b. 1935), explains that he had a revelation from God in 1989. He felt led to construct a monument to African American history rendered in found objects and house paint in his side yard. There are representations of African warriors watching their descendants’ struggles in Alabama; tributes to black scientists and military leaders; recreations of the epic civil rights confrontations in Birmingham, Montgomery and Selma; biblical scenes; a memorial to a little girl who was swept into a rain-swollen storm drain in 1999; and hand-lettered messages everywhere. In a piece on cultural self-criticism, Minter painted a series of street signs with names like ‘Self Hate Street,’ ‘Gang Warfare Street,’ and ‘Babies Having Babies Having Babies Self-Genocide Street.’ Visitors should knock on Minter’s front door before entering the side yard if his pickup truck is parked in the driveway; otherwise, they should view the art from the sidewalk."

Artistic Theme: Mixed Media.

A beginners definition of mixed media, in reference to visual art, is an art piece in which multiple mediums of art have been used within the creation. An example of mediums include paint, ink, college, graphite, etc. Multimedia art is the use of art alongside with non-visual elements, such as sound, literature, drama, dance, motion graphics, music or interactivity.

The most important factors when executing mixed media is to place the mediums in order of thickest. Thus using the
"fat over lean" method.

2. Carla Miedema
  • An local Ontario Artist who uses relief sculpture and a build up of acrylic paint to create her works of Art. She mainly makes use of landscapes and the elevation of small pieces of nature such as muchrooms, lichen, and wildflowers as the focal point of her artwork.
  • She has graduated with a degree in Fine Arts at Queens University.
Her Site.

3. Panteles Xerohemonas
  • Has a mixed media series called the 16 Devotional Stories that combines a financial background with emotional imagery, thus combining two different elements that are commonly not together.. together! :O
  • On a serious note, it's a quite unique series of pieces. The old age glued together college premise taken to the next level along with technology because it seems to appear that it created with the assistance of technology. I can not find much information about him, but his work is quite nice.

4. You Are Beautiful
  • This probably isn't mixed media, but it is a great way to promote happiness and self-confidence in a person. Imagine driving down this PUBLIC highway and seeing this at 7:30 am in the morning, waist deep in traffic. That'd make me pretty happy, or at least make me a smile.
  • This is their missions statement:
You Are Beautiful is a simple, powerful statement which is incorporated into the over absorption of mass media and lifestyles that are wrapped in consumer culture.

The intention behind this project is to reach beyond ourselves as individuals to make a difference by creating moments of positive self realization. We're just attempting to make the world a little better.

Intention is the most important aspect of the You Are Beautiful project in its idea of purity. Nothing is sacred. Everything that has a perceived value becomes commodified. We work extremely hard that this message is received as a simple act of kindness, and nothing more.

Advertising elicits a response to buy, where this project elicits a response to do something. The attempt with You Are Beautiful is to create activism instead of consumerism.

You Are Beautiful uses the medium of advertising and commercialization to spread a positive message.
Projects like these make a difference in the world by catching us in the midst of daily life and creating moments of positive self realization.

Let's Make Fun of the Replicans! Yay!
An hilarious site with their own unique and funny interpretation for the warning images.

Examples!! taken from the site, but there are TONS more there. ^__^

Watch as this little kid gets stepped on! Poor thing! I have never understood sibling relationships!

Japanese Snow Pika!
The name of this robot is Yuki-taro. And despite this contraption being ultra adorable, it does serve a purpose. It uses GPS sensors, built-in video cameras and tank-like treading along with zero human supervision to plow away snowbanks and compress it into chunks of ice! It weighs 800lbs, is 5 feet in length and 2 feet wide. That's a TINY machine that would be great in my backyard. Imagine how chill one could be watching it roam around the streets. The creators of this have obviously won numerous awards. Congrats!

It will also be commerically available within 5 years for $8,30o. If you live in Canada and dread plowing snow every morning, this will be GREAT so start saving your pennies now!

Now! Here's A Way to Discipline Your Kid
This dad worked his butt off to try and get his 15 year old son a guitar hero III, but dumb little boy of his got high on the patio AND got caught red-handed smoking up. The dad got pissed off at his son and told this story on ebay, and started selling this brand new guitar hero III online. It got to $9, 100.01 by the time the auction ended. I bet you that kid learned his lesson!

YPL: Leash Your Girl
  • 60 inches of coated nylon!
  • safety wrist strap ensures you'll keep your girl
  • variety of styles and colours (yes I will spell it the Canadian way)
This product was designed to keep your woman in her place, and let your boss sitting right beside her at the table know, that she is all yours!

Pennywell Miniature Pigs
Selective breeding at it's cutest! These are a series of runt piglets mated with other runt piglets so that they all get the genes which let them become so tiny and small! It's truly adorable. The actual plan for these piglets is eventually become pets, like household felines or canines. You never know, next time you walk into your local pet store, they might start selling these piggies. Right now they are only being sold in England and I believe the same premise is being executed in Australia through breeders.

Crackbook
Spoof of the social networking site Facebook. It's actually quite great because you can actually navigate through the parody of the site and everything is made fun of. Check it out. ^__^

Everything About Colour! & The Tea For A Voyage

Colour wheels found in life and art! :O I love my little tastes of the rainbow every so often, especially in the form of a colour wheel. Frankly, to be honest, how could I possibly claim to have an artist's blog without a SINGLE colour wheel! It's frightful! (psst, click on the image to find more colour wheels! )

(image from Deviant Art by =NotforyousweetE)

Are you colour blind? Here's a lovely quiz to see if you are. CLICK!

Colour/Rainbow in everyday still life. It's honestly, a very simple and unique idea. It's a modern version of the still but using photography, and using colours to draw us in. It's actually fabulous in that respect. He took a classic object and turned into this magnificent piece. I'm sure it would be fabulous displayed on a huge wall. It'd have a really great effect on the room at least. Anyways, this is another one of my finds from
DA. It is actually called Everyday Colour by PurplePawn. Obviously a photographer.

Rankin an artist from London, is a photographer. He has photographed famous celebrities to his own personal models. He is iconic and different because he has his own personal style, specifically the intimacy of all his portraits. He is a bit naughty with some of his pieces, but he holds the beauty and ability to see into his models and bring out a powerful persona within them. Today this icon has a world renown reputation as one of the world's leading photographers.

Victor Wang is a painter from China who
"use[s] the human face as a vehicle to paint human experiences - worry and wonder, sadness and pleasure" often reflecting his own personal life experiences. Most of his paintings are portraits often incorporating the colours of sunflowers, and fields. This evoked memories of sad times and happy times during his childhood. His family and himself had be sent to a reeducation camp where he was forced to do grueling labour in fields, but even in his youth he was drawn to sunflowers for he used to frolic in the sunflower fields with his brother.

Juno My New Favourite Film

It all starts with a song by Barry Louis Polisar, a children's song writer.
This is a song that was produced in 1977, according to his website.

[lyrics]All I Want Is You by Barry Louis Polisar
If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee.
And if I was a tree growing tall and green
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves

If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee.
And if I was a tree growing tall and green
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were a river in the mountains tall,
The rumble of your water would be my call.
If you were the winter, I know I'd be the snow
Just as long as you were with me, let the cold winds blow

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were a wink, I'd be a nod
If you were a seed, well I'd be a pod.
If you were the floor, I'd wanna be the rug
And if you were a kiss, I know I'd be a hug

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were the wood, I'd be the fire.
If you were the love, I'd be the desire.
If you were a castle, I'd be your moat,
And if you were an ocean, I'd learn to float.

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

Initial thoughts on the lyrics, will be that it is so lame, and it sucks, but it doesn't. There's something to this song, that makes you happy. It's probably that unconditional love feeling you get from hearing it. The intro to Juno is done by shadowplay studios who hand drew the entire intro song. It looks like the good old way of animation, the one that's cool and captures the entire essence that Juno is really a kid. Yeah, yeah, all 16 year olds think that they are an adult, and I've been there, so I've definitely thought it then too, but they're still just kids. Sometimes, life throws something at you, that you have to deal with and that makes you grow up. Anyways, the main point, the intro is very original and good due to that respect. A classic idea, taken on a new fresh spin. :) [I take little details WAY too seriously]

To the actual film Juno. Brief summary - girl gets knocked up - she needs to figure out what to do with it - lots of family drama - with a comedic twists. The screenwriter is named Diablo Cody, a stripper turned writer. She writes a bitchin' character for Juno, spunky teenage kid who is very outspoken but very real. Ellen Page being such an awesome actress portrayed that really well. It is a comedic drama in every essence, and it is definitely in the point of view of that teenage kid going through pregnancy at such a young age. It shows the reality of that, and Juno handles really well. You have to see the movie to truly respect this. Just a note, to fully understand Juno, it'd best to update yourself on teenage slang and lingo. She has the most catchy, dorky lines ever, that only the OC kids will never truly understand its appeal, but a fellow nerd adores. Even if you don't understand her references, Ellen Page fabulous actress.

Micheal Cera, most awkward kid ever! I love it. It's so adorable, definitely appeals to my love of nerds. His voice cracks in every scene, it's brilliant. Question is, was that intentional?

Nonetheless, AWESOME MOVIE! Brilliant flick for all ages(over 13). If you are a conservative catholic this might not be your cup of tea, but recall its important to support fellow up-and-coming Canadians.

Juno, made me fall in love with Kimya Dawson. She's this indie rocker chick. Big hair, soft voice, with catchy little lyrics. But, not crap britney spears gimme more shit lyrics, but good ones. Some of her songs have her little one, which is very cute, and she even formed a little band for them called antsy pants. A cute little band with kids, singing kids song and not disney bullcrap. I love it. To be honest though...anything involving a little one, is an immediate heart stopper for me. One of her songs, called "My Mom" is one of my favourites, and also a sad song. It's really good though. "Tire Swing", "Loose Lips" and "I Like Giants" are also great tunes. Currently listening to them on my lovely iPod. Sometimes you can't resist but give into corporate capitalism, but in apples defense they create AWESOME products.

Guitar Hero

Guitar Hero
I had my first experience playing guitar hero today! And absolutely LOVED it. It reminds me A LOT of DDR, except for the usage of hands, and rather than the dancing feet. Obviously I started on easy mode, and obviously it did pwn the crap out of me, but it was so much fun. The legends of rock edition did not have Jimi Hendrix either apparently or the Beatles, but Kiss definitely fell into the marketing ploy and let their music be used.

Ok, but it is a good game. It's very good if you like games that do not use a lot of intellectual capacity but rather a waste of good time, ie fps games, rather than strategy ones. None the less, it does involve coordination of both your left and right hand. One hand for "strumming" ie smashing a protuberant plastic piece and another hand to press 5 various buttons, each illustrating the 5 strings on a guitar. Reca
ll that each of these buttons are colour differently for the hero's ease. Creative eh? You can also unleash your star power but raising the neck/bridge towards your head. Ie, getting into a rock star solo stance where the crowd will cheer and call out how cool you are. It's an awful nuisance getting your mind co-ordinated to both strum and press the buttons ALL at the SAME time though, especially after spending most of your life playing stepmania or DDR. = P Woe is me eh? If you have a hard time finding beat, then it will be harder, but as any nerd knows, it can be taught.

Anyways, I personally think it is well worth the $100. :)

Be warned though, after playing guitar hero you might be tempted to play a real guitar the same way, but sadly it will not work. :(

Indian Pride

CALCULUS CREATED IN INDIA: 250 YEARS BEFORE NEWTON

Researchers in England may have finally settled the centuries-old debate over who gets credit for the creation of calculus.

For years, English scientist Isaac Newton and German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz both claimed credit for inventing the mathematical system sometime around the end of the seventeenth century.

Now, a team from the universities of Manchester and Exeter says it knows where the true credit lies — and it's with someone else completely.

The "Kerala school," a little-known group of scholars and mathematicians in fourteenth century India, identified the "infinite series" — one of the basic components of calculus — around 1350.

Dr. George Gheverghese Joseph, a member of the research team, says the findings should not diminish Newton or Leibniz, but rather exalt the non-European thinkers whose contributions are often ignored.

"The beginnings of modern maths is usually seen as a European achievement but the discoveries in medieval India between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries have been ignored or forgotten," he said. "The brilliance of Newton's work at the end of the seventeenth century stands undiminished — especially when it came to the algorithms of calculus.
Continue Article

"But other names from the Kerala School, notably Madhava and Nilakantha, should stand shoulder to shoulder with him as they discovered the other great component of calculus — infinite series."

He argues that imperialist attitudes are to blame for suppressing the true story behind the discovery of calculus.

"There were many reasons why the contribution of the Kerala school has not been acknowledged," he said. "A prime reason is neglect of scientific ideas emanating from the Non-European world, a legacy of European colonialism and beyond."

However, he concedes there are other factors also in play.

"There is also little knowledge of the medieval form of the local language of Kerala, Malayalam, in which some of most seminal texts, such as the Yuktibhasa, from much of the documentation of this remarkable mathematics is written," he admits.

Joseph made the discovery while conducting research for the as-yet unpublished third edition of his best-selling book The Crest of the Peacock: the Non-European Roots of Mathematics.

Someone emailed this to me, and I cannot help but proclaim at the Pride I feel. Hell yes. Another great accomplishment home sweet home has been involved in. Can I hear a hell yeah? Oh hell yeah! =D I know I'm a nerd. -.-

Engineering Students (the nerd inside us all will enjoy this joke!)

Engineering Students

An engineer was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess".

He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.

The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week."

The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.

The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you and do ANYTHING you want."

Again the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.

Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess, that I'll stay with you for a week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"

The engineer said, "Look I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that's cool."

Electricity ftw

Learn and have fun! Bullshit, well, honestly, it _IS_ probably educational, but fuck that!! :O its fun! You have to find ways to get the ball into the goal, using a series of circuits and obstacles! I find it a challenge, yet FUNNN!!
